When it comes to purchasing an infrared sauna, there are many important factors to weigh and consider. Are all infrared saunas created equal? Where should I purchase my sauna? What specific features are most important to look for in an infrared sauna? What size sauna would best suit your needs and space requirements?
In this blog, we will answer these questions and outline 6 key elements to consider when shopping for an Infrared Sauna. We are confident this will assist you in finding the safest and most effective sauna possible.
Let’s dive in!
Where should you purchase your sauna from?
The world of saunas is not a one-size-fits-all affair. For nearly two decades, only a few major players dominated the Australian market. However, in recent years, the infrared sauna industry has been flooded with numerous companies selling cheap, generic saunas that often disappoint customers with poor quality and abysmal service.
Our testing has revealed that many of these new brands emit high levels of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and are cheaply constructed using plywood, toxic glues, synthetic fabrics, and other low-cost materials. So while options have expanded, not all saunas are created equal. Buyers need to be cautious and do their research to find a quality product with good customer support.
It’s clear that many retailers and their staff don’t really understand the implications of selling so-called “full spectrum” saunas. These resellers all claim their saunas offer near-infrared and mid-infrared benefits, on top of far-infrared. But these claims reveal a fundamental lack of knowledge about the basics of radiant heat and the science behind near-infrared light therapy.
In contrast, Sun Stream Saunas has been an innovator in the infrared sauna industry for over 20 years. Their focus has been on providing the safest, most therapeutically effective saunas possible. Starting in Canada, Sun Stream now has distribution warehouses across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, UK, and Europe.
How do I choose a great infrared sauna?
Choosing the right infrared sauna can be tricky with so many options on the market. Let me help you navigate this process by highlighting 6 key factors to consider:
1. Does it truly have Low EMF & ELF Heaters?
Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and electric fields (ELF) can have adverse health effects, especially for those with compromised immunity. Look for saunas that truly have low EMF and ELF levels. Sun Stream Infrared Saunas, for example, use innovative carbon panel heaters that measure under 2mG of magnetic fields and have industry-leading low electric field exposure.
2. Where are the heaters positioned?
Heater placement is critical in infrared saunas since they heat the body directly. The more we target the body, the faster you’ll sweat. That’s because infrared heat is absorbed by the moisture in your skin and drawn in deeper through conduction to the muscles, inducing a deep, heavy sweat.
Unfortunately, most infrared sauna brands don’t install heaters on the front wall. They also often stop the side wall heaters short of the front of the seat, leaving the front of the body without any radiant heat.
In contrast, Sun Stream’s Evolve saunas provide superior infrared heat immersion. They have a large 300-watt heater placed directly in front of you on the door, giving you true 360-degree surround infrared heat for a faster, heavier sweat.

3. Do the Heaters have Cloth Covers?
One of the most important factors to consider when purchasing an Infrared Sauna is that the Heater Panels should NOT have any cloth covers. Unfortunately, over 90% of competing Infrared Sauna brands use synthetic cloth covers on their carbon panel heaters. However, our Sun Stream ‘Nano-Carbon’ heaters do not use these cloth covers.
There are 3 key reasons why this is so important:
-
Cloth Covers significantly reduce the Infrared Heat Output (Emissivity) of the heaters.
-
Cloth Covers can introduce potentially off-gassing glues and synthetic fabrics into the sauna environment.
-
Cloth Covers make it almost impossible to properly clean and maintain the hygiene of the sauna.
4. Is the Sauna Assembled with Non-Toxic Glue?
Aside from a small number of custom-made saunas, most infrared saunas in Australia are constructed using standard wood glues. Customers often ask if the glue used is non-toxic.
We are proud to say that all Sun Stream infrared saunas are built using ‘Titebond’ water-based glues made in the USA, which are FDA approved for food contact.
5. Is it Electrically Certified to Australian Standards?
When buying a sauna, you want to ensure the electrical components have been properly tested and certified. Very few sauna companies can provide legitimate electrical certification.
All Sun Stream saunas are built to the joint electrical safety standard AS/NZS 60335.1:2020, created by Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand.
6. Does it have an Extensive Warranty?
With any product that has working parts and electronics, there is a risk of breakdowns occurring. Therefore, it’s crucial to have a comprehensive warranty in place. The Sun Stream sauna range comes with a Residential Lifetime Warranty covering the entire sauna – the heaters, electronic control system, cabinet, light bulbs, and everything else.
